Gas pressure washers are in a different league from electric models. When you need to strip paint, clean years of grime off a commercial lot, or handle daily use on a job site, you need gas power. I've tested these machines on concrete, heavy equipment, farm vehicles, and seriously neglected siding ¡ª the places where an electric washer just doesn't cut it.
The gas market splits into two categories: consumer-grade (Honda GC series or similar engines, aluminum pumps, $300-600) and commercial-grade (Honda GX series or premium engines, triplex pumps, $700-1500+). The right choice depends on how often you use it. Twice a year for driveway cleaning? A consumer model is fine. Weekly use for a detailing business? Go commercial or you'll be replacing pumps every season.
One thing I've learned the hard way: don't buy a gas pressure washer based on PSI alone. Pump quality, engine brand, and serviceability matter just as much. I've had a 3200 PSI unit fail in its second season because the pump used cheap seals, while a 2800 PSI unit with a CAT pump is still running five years later.
Engine: Honda GX series is the gold standard. Honda GC, Briggs & Stratton, and Generac engines are fine for occasional use. Pump: Triplex plunger pumps (CAT, Comet, General Pump) are rebuildable and last. Axial cam pumps are cheaper and die faster. Serviceability: Check if the pump has separate oil fill, if the engine has a fuel shutoff, and if replacement parts are available locally ¡ª not just through Amazon.
